LG Electronics started life in October 1958 as GoldStar, the electronics arm of what became the LG Group. It is headquartered in LG Twin Tower in Seoul and listed on the Korea Exchange.
LG also made solar panels, but on February 23, 2022 it announced it would close its solar panel business by the end of June that year, citing price competition and rising raw material costs, and promised continued support for existing panel customers. The hybrid inverter listed here comes from its home-energy product line.
The model listed here is the ESS Home 5 (model code D005KD1N111), a 5 kW hybrid inverter for a home solar-plus-battery system, with two solar trackers and room for up to 6.6 kW of panels. Its installation and operating manuals date from the late 2010s, so check support and warranty status before planning a new system around one.
The ESS Home 5 accepts up to 800 V and tracks between 210 and 680 V, a window set for long strings. The low end is the constraint on a small roof: on a hot afternoon a short string can fall below 210 V and stop tracking efficiently, so plan on at least six large panels or eight smaller ones. At the top, a string of large panels near 50 V open-circuit should stay at 14 or fewer so that its cold-morning voltage remains under 800 V.
Current is the tighter limit for modern panels. Each tracker takes only 13 A, below the operating current of most large-format panels with 182 mm or 210 mm cells, so a modern panel added to this inverter will be clipped on bright days.
