Redback Technologies is an Australian maker of smart hybrid inverters and home battery systems, headquartered in Brisbane, Queensland. It designs its products for Australian homes and sells them only through electrical wholesalers such as Rexel, Middy’s, Krannich and Greentech, so buyers reach it through an installer.
The company went through a difficult stretch in 2024. Redback entered voluntary administration on 5 March 2024 and came out of it in May the same year under new owners, Australia Ebon Group, the Australian arm of the China-based fintech company Ebon International. At the time Redback stated that all warranty policies remained intact and that its local technical support and warranty teams would continue to serve installers.
The range is compact and single-phase. The SH5000-G3 and SH6000-G3 are third-generation hybrid inverters of 5 and 6 kW with a battery connection for self-consumption and backup. The SI series (SI5000 to SI10000) are grid-tied string inverters of 5 to 10 kW for homes without a battery. In both, the number is the AC power in watts.
An integrated Australian system: inverter, battery and monitoring from one local company, supported by an Australian team. The trade-off is the size of the business behind it. The 2024 administration shows the risk of a small manufacturer, even though warranties were carried over.
The SI string inverters are rated 550 V with a 70–540 V tracking window, and the SH-G3 hybrids 600 V with 60–550 V. With 49 V panels, a string of ten reaches roughly 530–540 V on the coldest mornings inland, so ten is the practical ceiling on the SI series and eleven only on the hybrids in a mild coastal climate. Warm roofs matter more in much of Australia: make sure a hot string still sits comfortably inside the window.
Current splits by size. The SI5000 and SI6000 take 13.5 A per maximum power point tracker (MPPT), less than most 182 mm and 210 mm cell panels deliver, so expect some clipping; the SI8000 and SI10000 take 27 A, and the SH-G3 hybrids 16 A.
